Quirky to Modern Art Quilts
Hippie at Heart

By Judy Howard

Quirky to Modern Art Quilts—Hippie at Heart shows that there is a little free-spirited Hippie in all of us and that what was old is new again. Quilters from the 1800s through today have aimed at changing the world by leaving a legacy of creative kindness, love and story that only quilts can provide. As artists we desire to express beauty, love, thoughts, religious and political beliefs, pain and victories through our quilting—to paint our story, capture our memories and dreams with needle and thread. We yearn to be liberated from the oppression of conforming to traditional constrictive patterns that squelch our individuality. And we rebel against being restricted by parameters and judged by the quilt police. We want to stretch the boundaries—be liberated rebel quilters. We’ve got to be free.

Some Quilt Hippies, like the Hipsters of the sixties, desire to return to a simpler minimalistic style, finding inspiration in nature, recycling and making do with materials on hand. Like the Hipsters, we are reassessing our purpose and the meaning of life in the greater scheme. This is called enlightenment which Quilt Hippies express by creating outside the box, using hand dyed or painted and bizarre fabrics, digital photos of nature and loved ones and outrageous colors and improvisational patterns.

In the late 1960s, the Hippie in me rebelled against my legalistic upbringing. I searched for significance before finding freedom in Jesus Christ, whose rebel teachings revolutionized the world. It is my purpose in life to give Him glory in everything I do. Therein lies my joy and fulfillment and gives meaning to life.

It’s my prayer that this book points you to find enlightenment and true freedom in Jesus Christ alone and that you continue changing the world—one stitch at a time.
